From Evidence to Impact. From Policy to Practice.

Strengthening community-driven systems for health, livelihoods and sustainability across Africa.
Uvumbuzi Africa works at the community level to strengthen health systems, advance sustainable livelihoods, and drive locally led solutions using evidence, partnerships, and practical implementation approaches that can scale.

The general philosophy of Uvumbuzi Africa is to ‘leave the earth a better place than we found it.’ This is in line with the spirit of the preamble to The Constitution of Kenya 2010 which states: ‘We the people of Kenya…RESPECTFUL of the environment, which is our heritage, and determined to sustain it for the benefit of future generations’ We encourage the protection of all wildlife and natural resources, recognizing that their future depends on our actions today.

As an NGO dedicated to the protection and conservation of wildlife and the environment, Uvumbuzi Africa exists to promote and actively advocate for the entrenchment of citizen engagement in conservation in Kenya and across the broader African continent. The establishment  of Uvumbuzi Africa as an independent NGO was inspired by the Uvumbuzi Club and its founding members who have been passionate about conservation since the 70’s and it is the pioneer members of the club that we have to thank for further fuelling the fire of conservation in the organization’s founders’.

Our identity is derived from the Swahili word ‘Vumbua’ which means ‘to discover’. In this context, Uvumbuzi Africa is premised on the concept of ‘Conservation by Discovery’ of the numerous, largely undiscovered conservation stories, people and natural habitats in Kenya and across Africa.

Uvumbuzi is a Swahili word meaning “discovery” or “innovation.” It reflects our commitment to discovering what works, innovating with purpose, and applying evidence-driven solutions to real-world challenges across Africa.

Our mission is to work at the community level to strengthen health systems, advance sustainable livelihoods, and drive locally led solutions using evidence, partnerships, and practical implementation approaches that can scale.

We serve underserved and vulnerable populations, including:

  • Women and girls

  • Youth and out-of-school young people

  • Smallholder farmers and pastoralists

  • Persons with disabilities

  • Indigenous communities

  • People affected by displacement or conflict

Our unique value proposition is that we bridge the gap between policy and practice. Many organizations do research OR implementation  we do both. We combine technical expertise, community-level implementation, and systems strengthening to deliver solutions that work in real-world African contexts and can scale sustainably.

We follow a four-step, closed-loop model called “From Evidence to Impact”:

  1. Evidence Generation — We generate and synthesize data, research, and field insights.

  2. Policy Influence — We work with governments to translate evidence into policies.

  3. Implementation at Scale — We deliver integrated programs at community and system levels.

  4. Learning and Adaptation — We continuously use data and feedback to refine our approaches.

We track three primary outcomes:

  • Strengthened community health capacity — improvements in health-seeking behavior, access to services, and community health worker performance.

  • Improved sustainable livelihoods — increased household incomes, diversified income streams, and financially sustainable community enterprises.

  • Locally led solution adoption — number of community-designed interventions scaled, institutionalized, or adopted by government and partners.
